Back home most homes don’t have central air, and most have boilers instead of forced hot air heat. So this central heating and air conditioning is all new to me.

Today ours needed repair and I was able to follow ( stalk ) the repair guy all through and learn about the system.

If you have a built in electrostatic filter there are filters in there that need cleaning quarterly. If you have not cleaned yours Simple Green helps to remove the build up. If you put the filters back while they are wet you will fry the air filter unit.

If you have two units in a two story open home, set your first floor ac 2′ cooler than upstairs in the summer and 2′ warmer in the winter to properly balance the units.

If you use the extra good hepa filters you are probably not getting proper air flow through the system and you are beating the system up. The home ac units are not designed to push through that much material. Use the cheap filters.

A 15 seer is a good solid unit that will likely save 30%-35% over our current 10 seer units. After that energy savings per dollar spent up to 20 seer doesn’t make much sense and the higher the seer the newer and flakier the technology.

A forced air heating and cooling system will last about 15 years with proper care. ( Don’t forget to gently clean the fins on the outside units with a garden hose once a year )

A new system ( 15 seer 3-5 ton units ) will cost about 8k to replace. You need the outside compressor, the condenser in the attic, air filter and heater. If you skip the electrostatic air filter you can probably do it for about 6k.

If you need a good ac/heating guy in North west Houston give Proline a call.

Today we went to Zayed park. Like most of Dubai it’s still under construction. Also it was about 110′F and noon when we visited hence the lack of other humans about.

After we went to the shopping mall to people watch. On the first floor of the mall are several traditional clothing stores, racks and racks of burkas and the mens’ robes, long shirts and pants. Only about half the traditional clothing is off the rack, bolts of fabric were stacked in each shop for custom clothing.

Upstairs were the stores and restaurants you see at any mall in the world. More of the upscale and less of the downscale but it easily could’ve been a US mall.

The crowd at the mall was about half women today, most in traditional wear. I can’t take photos so I’ll do my best to describe them.

The men wear all white, long pants with a long white shirt or just a long white robe. They too cover their hair with a long scarf. When they eat they take the tails of the scarf and place them on top of their heads. Keeps them out of dinner I expect. The men all wear sandels on their feet. Their robes tend to be sheer enough to make out their undershirts beneath.

The women all wear black. The burkas are like what your grandmother would call a house coat. Long sleeved, floor length with a covered opening down the front. Many are very shear, most are not. Some have rhinestones and embroidery on them, most do not. The African women only button them down to just below their chest and when they walk their colored skirts show through the opening.

The UAE women keep them closed down to the floor. Most wear slippers under the burka, but there were quite a few 4″ spike heels under them as well. Most women had long dresses beneath, a few wore jeans.

About half the women do not cover their faces. Of the remaining, half cover their nose and lower face with a scarf that hooks onto each side of the head scarf. Often they have their head scarfs covering most of their foreheads as well so there is only a narrow slit for their eyes. When eating they either remove the face covering or slightly lift it and eat underneath.

More women had their faces covered today. They have a very sheer veil they drop down over their face and face covering when they first enter the mall. It’s very much like the lace coverings we still wore to church in the 1960s but no lace, just sheer fabric.

The local women are shorter on average than US women, I’m 5’2″ and tall side here. They are also very much curvier than US women. It is unusual to see an obese person, here but the few that are are more often female than male. The men avg about 5’10″ here, most are quite thin.

Every one here seems very friendly, you can see the women’s eyes crinkle when they smile back at you.

All in all it’s a pleasant place but there’s little to do with ones self here. Flying out tomorrow 930 am local time, land at IAH around dinner time after 17 hours in the air.

Today we rented a car and drove south, east and north of Dubai. Like Houston civilization drops off very rapidly once you leave the city.

The deserts are far greener than I imagined, though I’m told the plant life drops off rapidly as you get further from the coast. The desert photos are about 50 miles in from the coast, the coast photos are about 50 miles north of downtown. In most areas the sand is white, in others there’s a reddish brown sand overlaying the white sands.

Camels are common and all the highways have fences between the desert and the road, most likely to keep the camels off the highway.

The ocean is beautiful. There are salt water marshes extending way out from the road. There’s a surprising lack of birds at the shore, or anywhere else we’ve been.

The burbs north of the city along hwy 88 are amazing but empty. There’s not only McMansionvilles, but McPalacevilles. Amazing homes all in developments that appear to be abandoned. The homes are so beautiful it’s hard to believe the people won’t come at some point.

We not only passed abandoned developments but entire small cities under construction. Everything being built at once, housing, retail, gov’t buildings. These were still actively under construction. Then at random places along the road you’d find abandoned condo towers.

Lazy day today, one more day here I plan to wander in the city some more tomorrow.

I’ve not seen a single dog here. We did see one cat, actually we heard him from 3 alleys away. What a howl. He’s a long white orange spotted stray who was dumpster diving and singing his tale of woe.

Prayers are called even at 4 am. They sound like the Catholic priests doing their Latin sing song. Different language and religion but the feel is the same.

Police are scarce here, I’ve seen them but only rarely.

Today we hopped on the subway. It’s amazing, the stops are larger than some airports I’ve seen. It’s fully automated, no conductors, and cheap.

First we rode out to the new part of the city. It looks like something out of the Jettsons, every building more amazing than the one before it. Three buildings are being built for every one completed. Dubai is totally a city of the future. But that end of town is empty. The people haven’t moved in yet and often we were the only pedestrians in sight.

Then we rode back to the other end of Dubai. We got off at the most crowded stop and followed the crowd. First we ended up in an Indian immigrant area. Thousands and thousands of shops and people everywhere.

We stopped to eat at a Lebanese/Russian restaurant. The menu items all listed ‘meat’ not chicken, lamb or beef, just meat. I’ve no idea what I had for dinner but it was good.

I tried to get more photos but every time I slowed down a young Indian man would run up saying ‘genuine fake watches, genuine fake handbags, Rolex, Fendi, Prada. . . ‘ So we had to keep moving.

From the Indian area we wandered into old Dubai. Fabric stores every where, lots of shops to make custom suits, burkas and any other clothing you might desire.

Along twisting turning alleys we wandered. I started to notice more and more people were barefoot. I had led us into the back door of a mosque. We were able to back out with out getting dumped into Dubai Creek. ( This is why my sister and husband get nervous when I go wandering ;p )

The bong like things you see in the shop window are for smoking tobacco. Water is in the bottom, tobacco up top and hot coals are placed on the tobacco. All restaurants and bars keep several handy and you see many people smoking them at dinner.

One of the biggest sellers in all the areas we’ve been to are big fuzzy, fake fur blankets – like the kind you see in the states sold along side velvet Elvis’s. I haven’t figured that out – it’s about 95′F at night and 105′F in the day.

Every one here speaks English we’ve not found any one we couldn’t talk to. I’m still shocked so few spoke English in Tokyo. Cameras are very taboo. People glance at the camera as if I were carrying a weapon. So the photos are not as clear or targeted as I’d like.

Today was my first day out and about in Dubai. Friday is like Sunday here so most everything was closed all morning. We made a pass through the local shopping mall, visited the world’s tallest building and went to the Old Golden Suk shopping district.

The shopping mall was mostly locals about 1/3 women 2/3 men. The Old Suk shopping district is Indian and Pakistani natives and about 95% men.

About 80% of the women wear burkas, about half of those with face covering. The other 20% of the women wear Indian or Western wear, even half of them cover their hair. Some of the burkas are very light weight some quite heavy. Almost all are black but many have designs on the front or sleeves. There are some brightly colored burkas usuallly worn by women who are African.

The men wear robes with tshirts and underpants or loose pants and a long shirt over them. About half of them cover their heads. The head covers are extremely thin fabric.

While traffic is light here, there is little pedestrian and bicycle traffic. There are buses, taxis everywhere and a train.

Juice is every where with little juice shops full of fruit that squeeze it fresh, coffee and tea shops are rare.

We stopped at an Indian place for dinner and I had a potato pancake with tomatoes and onions, it looked like a pizza.

Photography of people is frowned on here so it’s been tough getting pictures. The women all seem friendly and smile back. The men are mixed, they all stare, most will smile back, some just glare.

Prayers are called several times a day, praying is done in the Mosques not in public and most of the people ignore the calls.

For every minute spent in organizing an hour is earned.

“Spend the last 5 minutes of every working day making out a must list for the next day’s tasks.” (Ivy Lee )

In the morning start with the first one and stay with it until you complete the task. Move it to the completed list and start on the next item.

In 1906 Ivy Lee gave this method to the managers at Bethlehem Steel, which in five years, went on to become the largest independent manufacturer of steel in the US.

Ivy Lee was also the inventor of the ‘press release’ which has changed the fate of many a company.

Could you use an extra hour? How about six? Spend six minutes at the end of every day filling out the ‘must do’ list for tomorrow. Then start with the top most important task and work your way through the list. You’ll be running the show in no time. Try it for a week and see how your productivity increases.

FEATURES
- Icon badge shows uncompleted items – helps to nudge you to finish your tasks
- Drag and drop items in order of importance
- Drag and drop completed items to completed list
- Easy editing of list

Download the 6 Important Things and become the company superstar for only $1.99
